Limburger was first produced and sold in Belgium (Limburg, to be specific,) but was later naturalized by the Germans, who became the sole producers of the cheese in Europe. Today, Chalet Cheese in Monroe, Wisconsin is the only plant in the United States to produce surface-ripened limburger.
